About "Primal ground - Decay and stillness"

by Hans Kwaspen

About the artwork

Primal soil is my ode to the marks left by time and impermanence on the skin of the world. In this work, I have captured a weathered concrete surface, in which rusty smudges form their own rhythm as silent witnesses of oxidation and erosion. The warm rust tones contrast with the cool grey of the corrugated sheet metal, creating a tension between decay and stillness.

My inspiration comes from the mysticism of Meister Eckhart, who describes the primal ground as the origin of all images and words. While photographing, I did not feel like a maker, but a listener-as if the surface itself whispered its story, shaped by time, moisture and silence.

The atmosphere is earthy, raw and contemplative. In the spirit of artists like Bernd and Hilla Becher or the material sensitivity of Antoni Tàpies, I let the surface speak for itself. Not an illustration, but an invitation to reflection.

What makes this work special is its openness. It does not force anything, but invites you to look, feel and remember. As a work of art on the wall, it acts as a visual anchor-a place where the gaze comes to rest and the mind is allowed to wander into the unspoken
