Tanah Lot is a rock foundation off the Indonesian island of Bali. It is home to the historical Hindu crusade temple Pura Tanah Lot (actually "Tanah Lot temple"), a well-known cultural and tourist icon for photography.
Tanah Lot implies "Land [in the] Sea" in the Balinese language. Found in Tabanan, about 20 kilometers (12 minutes) northwest of Denpasar, the temple rests on a big overseas rock which has been continuously formed for many years by the ocean tide.
Tanah Lot is declared to be the work of the 16th-century Dang Hyang Nirartha. He saw the rock-island's stunning environment throughout his journeys along the south coast and decided to rest there. Some anglers saw him and purchased him presents. Nirartha then invested the night on the little island. Later on, he talked to the anglers and told them to develop a holy place on the rock, for he felt it to be a sanctuary to praise the Balinese sea gods.The primary divine being of the temple is Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara, the sea god or sea power and nowadays, Nirartha is likewise worshipped here.
