About ‘Raddo Gyorui: Violet Tide’ by Koeien van Klaas

With Violet Tide, the series takes on an almost futuristic elegance. The bright yellow and deep violet create a visual tension that feels both playful and intense. The fish no longer seems to come from a market or a nature documentary, but from an alternative pop world where biology and design merge.

Here, the violet functions as an electric shadow around the body. This creates a soft glow that contrasts with the harsh black details of the scales and fins. The work feels less aggressive than the red version and less cool than the blue variant. This combination strikes a perfect balance between mystery, energy and stillness.

The Japanese typography and the sleek framing once again reinforce the impression of a rare object, as if it were an exclusive label or an icon from an imaginary Japanese visual culture. The minimalist composition allows the fish to dominate completely, whilst the blocks of colour give the work an almost poster-like power.

Here, Klaas uses simple means to create a striking graphic image that looks both retro and contemporary. Through the combination of photography, pop art and Japanese influences, the work acquires its own visual language. A clear, powerful composition in which colour transforms into atmosphere and atmosphere transforms into identity.
