The NDSM site or simply NDSM is a district in Amsterdam North or the former site of the NDSM shipyard.
The four docks dug on the northwestern part of the NDSM were commissioned in 1987 by ship repair company Shipdock Amsterdam BV (from 2003 Amsterdam Ship Repair, from 2005 Shipdock BV, and from January 2015 Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam).
The vacant buildings on the southeastern part of the NDSM site were squatted over time. This developed into one of Amsterdam's 'breeding grounds', affordable living and working spaces for artists, craftsmen and support companies. They joined forces in the Kinetic North Foundation, which from 2001 was allowed to try out the new uses with subsidies from various agencies. In July 2006, the large ship's shed, the outside area and the ramps were handed over to the foundation.
Another part of the enormous site is in use by the Maritime Quarter Amsterdam-North, which is dedicated to managing and maintaining a collection of historic sea-going vessels and exploiting them for all kinds of purposes. The head office of MTV Networks was housed in a monumental carpentry shop, after restoration by the architect Max van Aerschot.
