Reading Blindness
This artwork is part of my Vulnerable series, in which I process my personal experiences into images that bring together strength and vulnerability.
In Reading Blindness, I bring to life a part of my childhood: the challenges, uncertainties, but also the breakthroughs that shaped me.
The clouds rising from the book symbolise the fog I often felt as a child when learning and reading. The book represents knowledge and possibilities, while the clouds represent the obstacles and confusion that dyslexia brought.
The red dress highlights my inner strength and determination to persevere, despite the struggles I experienced.
I clearly remember how getting my first pair of glasses made me discover that I was not stupid, but just had poor vision. Later, around age 11, I was diagnosed as dyslexic, a discovery that explained a lot and started a long road of self-acceptance.
With this work, I want to convey a message: people with dyslexia are not stupid or lazy. They often have brilliant creativity and unique talents that they showcase differently. This still life is a tribute to resilience and the power to keep developing yourself despite obstacles.
