The forest "Donkere Duinen" in Den Helder in the Dutch province of North Holland. . These trees stand with their trunks in the large pond and hang diagonally above the water. The trunks reflect in the smooth water with the evening sun.
The forest lies to the west and north against the dunes and is part of the Natura 2000 area Dunes Den Helder-Callantsoog. On the south side, the Jan Verfailleweg is the border with the Mariëndal nature reserve.
The Donkere Duinen were laid out in 1917 as a coniferous forest with Austrian pines, but are slowly changing into a deciduous forest. The plan to forest a portion of the dunes also met with criticism, including from the director of the Zoological Station in Den Helder, the current NIOZ, due to the loss of moist dune valleys and special plants.[1]
