Rembrandt van Rijn, The Song of Simeon, 1631 Joseph and Mary are in the temple to dedicate the newborn Jesus to God. There, the child is recognised by Simeon as the long-awaited Messiah. The old man takes him in his arms and raises a song of praise. The divine light that engulfs him seems to come from the child himself. Rembrandt was twenty-five and still living in Leiden when he painted this scene. In the same year, he moved to Amsterdam, where he started working much larger and painted portraits for the first time.
