River view by moonlight, Aert van der Neer, c. 1640 - c. 1650 Van der Neer was a painter with two specialities: winter scenes and nocturnal, moonlit landscapes. With just a few colours of paint, Van der Neer managed to create the perfect illusion of a moon night here. The chilly glow reflects in the water, settles on the windows of the houses on the left and lights up the white feathers of the ducks in the foreground. Rijksmuseum Rights: CC0
