About "Rotterdam Central Station and Nationale Nederlanden"

About the artwork

Rotterdam Central Station Night A total rebuild of the station and its surroundings began in 2004 to handle the increasing traffic of trains, for example the high-speed train between Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris, and to give the Randstadrail its place. Also, the existing station had become too small to handle the large number of passengers. The old metro station with two tracks and an island platform was demolished after the new Rotterdam Centraal, now with three tracks instead of two, due to the extension of the RandstadRail connection between Rotterdam south and The Hague. The old Rotterdam Centraal metro station has been demolished and switches have now been laid for the new station where the platform used to be. For the metro, the new Rotterdam Centraal contains three tracks and two island platforms. Track 1 is for metro line E towards The Hague Central only. Track 2 is for metro line E towards Slinge, and during extra services between Slinge - Rotterdam Centraal v.v., track 2 is also used as terminus of metro line D. Track 3 is laid between the two island platforms, which is unique, as it involves opening the metro carriage doors on both sides. Track 3 is used as the terminus of metro line D towards De Akkers.
