About "Rotterdam - Koningshavenbrug: "de Hef" B/W"

About the artwork

This iconic old railway bridge is a national monument and well known to every Rotterdammer. It is a lasting reminder of times gone by. The bridge owes its nickname to the lifting mechanism used to raise the railway section lying between the banks of the Koningshaven whenever a ship needed to enter or leave the port. Its original name is: Koningshavenbrug. The bridge dates from 1927 and served until 1993. Then the bridge was replaced by a railway tunnel. The architect of the bridge was Pieter Joosting.
This night shot shows the beautifully lit bridge in all its glory.
The raw beauty of this bridge constructed with lots of rivets makes any purebred Rotterdammer's heart beat faster.
The fact that this bridge was never demolished means that today in
Rotterdam a nice contrast can be seen with the Erasmus Bridge and the Willemsbrug, each of which in turn are also architectural gems.
This photo was taken from the Kop van Zuid. On the opposite side is the Noordereiland, which also features the Willemsbrug, which provides the connection to the city centre from the Noordereiland.
