About ‘Sand fence at Parnassia’ by Marald Bes

A row of wooden posts at the entrance to Parnassia, in the dunes between Bloemendaal and Zandvoort, put there to hold the sand back. Low late-October sun coming in from the side.

The posts run away diagonally from the bottom left corner until, at the edge of the dune, they are no more than dashes. Each one lays a long sharp shadow across the sand, all of them parallel, reaching halfway up the frame.

Those shadows are more regular than the posts themselves, because the posts lean, some are broken, and the wire between them sags.

The sand is warm golden brown where the sun hits it and grey in the shade, and it is finely rippled by the wind. Those ripples run across the shadows, so two rhythms lie over each other.

Behind the posts the dune rises with marram grass on it, lying flat in the wind.

Above that the sky is hard blue, without a cloud in it. That blue against the golden sand is half the reason this works.

One for anyone who loves lines and shadows.
