About ‘Beach huts in a row, Katwijk’ by Marald Bes

Beach huts at Katwijk aan Zee, taken low down so the row runs from right beside you all the way to the horizon.

The first hut is large in the frame, pale yellow with vertical planking and a bright blue roof jutting out a little at the front. Behind it the rest stand exactly the same, smaller and smaller, until near the horizon they are only dashes.

On the left, half hidden behind that first hut, a red awning hangs, and next to it a green one. Those two colours break up the yellow at just the right moment.

The sand in the foreground is finely rippled by the wind, with footprints running the same way as the row.

The sky does as much work as the huts: blue with thin stretched cirrus running across it at an angle. Summer without harsh sun.

This one is for the Dutch coast, and for anyone who spent their summers on it.
