The sweet gum tree (Latin name: liquidambar styraciflua) is rather inconspicuous for much of the year. But in autumn it shines for a few weeks with its multicoloured, five-pointed leaves and its green spiky seed balls.
I took a close-up of those leaves and balls and rotated and transparently superimposed nine copies of them. The result was this abstract and moving image in which the colour splendour of the original photo still comes back.
In English, the styraciflua has many different names. Sweet gum tree is the best known, but the name Satin Walnut is also used. And that seemed like a nice title for this kaleidoscopy.
