About the artwork

Just across the border near Enschede, you can still find rich textile industry. Still is, as much is now being demolished and renovated. Around 1900, 7 families ruled the textile industry, namely; Van Heek, Ledeboer (partners of Van Heek & Co.), Jannink, Ter Kuile, Blijdenstein, Scholten and Menko. Several textile factories in Gronau and Glanerbrug, such as the firm Matthieu van Delden & Co., Baumwollspinnerei "Eilermark", Baumwollspinnerei "Deutschland", employed a large number of workers from Enschede. When the textile industry completely collapsed in the 1960s, most of Enschede's factories were lost with it. The Netherlands is a 'tidy' nation in this respect, few buildings were spared in Enschede and mostly demolished, rebuilt & renovated. How different is it in Germany or Belgium, where these old buildings remain (empty) for decades. Just across the border in Gronau stood 'die baumwolle spinnerei' factory where textiles were made. The building stood empty for decades. When we went there to take photos, part of the building had already been demolished. On the 2nd floor was this scale. The glass was broken, but definitely still recognisable as scales. Beautiful big thing, which was really worth photographing.

In this work, 'noise' can occur. This is part of the work and actually makes it more mysterious.
