About the artwork

Antwerp, Scheldt quays with museum cranes:
From the water, the city of Antwerp has a dramatic and menacing view. The Scheldt Quays stretch out, and there, among the immense cranes, the city itself seems to breathe. The 12 of the 18 gigantic museum cranes of the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) dominate the view, impressive monuments of industrial power and history. These cranes are not only a part of the port, but also part of the largest museum collection of harbour cranes in the world, a tribute to the city's industrial past. The image is dark and stark, the long shutter speed has made the water calm and almost foggy, adding to the gloomy atmosphere. The sky hangs heavy, the clouds threatening to hide the horizon. The whole creates a sense of power and desolation, a reminder of the port city's history. As the cranes stand quietly on the quay, the city looks to the future, but the past is unmistakably present. The sculpture evokes both admiration and respect for the massive industry that shaped the city.
