The harbor area of Scheveningen was developed from 1904 when the first port of Scheveningen was inaugurated. Village and harbor were still clearly separated by a dune from each other. Hr. Ms. Fearless (M886, A856) was a Dutch ocean minesweeper of the Intrepid class, built by the American shipyard Peterson Builders Inc. from Sturgeon Bay. The ships of the Intrepid class were in the United States built minesweepers of the Aggressiveklasse. After the withdrawal, the ship was converted to torpedo workship and renamed Hr. Ms. Mercuur. From May 11, 1973 until February 12, 1987 the Mercuur was attached to the submarine torpedo workship. After uitdienststelling the Mercuur was on March 14, 1988 on loan from the Foundation Nautical Quarter in Amsterdam. In July 1993, the ship was moved to the harbor of Scheveningen, where it can be admired as a museum ship.
