I made two versions of this Mill, this semi-abstract version in which the mill and the surrounding landscape are clearly recognisable, but many elements are also open to interpretation.
The other version leaves much more to the imagination. You can find both works in my online gallery of Werk aan de muur. Both variants are hand-painted.
In this semi-abstract version of "A mill on a polder canal" the recognisability of the original scene remains clearly present. The mill, the polder canal and the landscape are subtly abstracted, but the essence of the peaceful Dutch polder landscape in the summer month of July remains intact. The mix of abstract forms and realistic elements creates a balance between recognisability and innovation, capturing the power of nature and the moment of late summer in a contemporary way. This version contrasts with the fully abstract version, in which the shapes and colours are further released to explore the emotion and feeling of the painting on another level. Together, both works tell a story about the power of the landscape, but offer different ways to experience the magic of the polder landscape.
