Sibiu is one of the most beautiful towns in Transylvania. If you ask me, this is the most idyllic town in Romania. The streets and houses look like the set of a historical movie. Sibiu is also one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. Sibiu is still wonderfully authentic and charming.
Just like Brașov, Sibiu also has a German history. It fell under the medieval Hungarian Kingdom, but was under control of the Saxons (Germans). Their headquarters were in Sibiu, making it the most German and prosperous city in Transylvania. At that time Sibiu was called 'Hermannstadt' and Transylvania was called 'Siebenburgen' (the seven castles). After the First World War Sibiu became part of the Kingdom of Romania and after the Second World War most of the ethnic Germans emigrated to Germany and Austria. What they left behind is a beautiful town that we can enjoy now.
