As I stand with my tripod in the mud, at the bottom of the dike at the Uithuizerwad in Groningen, a breathtaking expansive landscape unfolds before me. The long shutter speed captures the dynamics of the clouds above the calm mudflats at low, while the wooden poles lead into the horizon like hushed witnesses. The silence is almost palpable; only the gentle murmur of the quite strong wind and the distant calls of birds break the calm. Before me lies the wet mudflats, gleaming with retreating water, in which the colours of the setting sun reflect subtly.
The long shutter speed captures not only the movement of the clouds, but also the sense of stillness and timelessness this landscape evokes. The wooden poles rise from the mud like silent sentinels, forming a gradual line towards the horizon. They lead the eye deeper into the picture, towards the horizon where sky and water merge.
This picture tells a story of emptiness that creates space for reflection. Of a place where nature rules and man is merely a guest. The Groningen Wadden is rugged and vulnerable at the same time - and it is precisely in this contrast that the magic lies.
