During an early morning walk in De Biesbosch, a subtle movement in the reeds caught my eye. There he stood: the bittern, a mysterious and rare marsh bird. With its beautifully patterned feathers, it seemed to completely blend in with its surroundings. Only when he cautiously took a step did his presence light up between water and reeds. To me, it felt like nature was revealing a secret that normally remains hidden.
What intrigues me about this moment is the tension between stillness and movement. The bird's posture, its tense leg above the surface of the water and its sharply protruding beak tell a story of patience and alertness. Every second seemed important, as if time stood still for a moment.
With this work, I want to convey that hushed beauty: the peace you only find when you really surrender to nature. It is an image that reminds me of the power of the inconspicuous and of the richness of our Dutch wetlands.
