About "Silhouette of Herons at sunrise in Kakadu National Park Australia"

by Henk van Dijk

About the artwork

Silhouette of herons in trees at a colourful sunrise in Kakadu National Park, Australia. Kakadu NP, Yellow Water cruise at sunrise.

Kakadu National Park is an Australian national park in the Northern Territory. It was established in 1981 and covers an area of 19,804 km². Kakadu is jointly managed by the Australian government and the original Aboriginal population. The name Kakadu is a corruption of the Aboriginal word "Gagudju".

Kakadu is located in the Top End of the Northern Territory. The area is bordered to the north by the Van Diemen Gulf, to the east by Arnhemland and to the south by Nitmiluk National Park. Kakadu is intersected by two major roads: the Kakadu Highway which runs from Pine Creek in the south to Jabiru, the main town in the national park, in the northeast, and the Arnhem Highway which connects the town of Darwin to the west of Kakadu with the Ranger uranium mine on the eastern edge of the national park.

Kakadu is twice listed on the World Heritage List, both because of its cultural value with a large number of Aboriginal rock paintings and because of its rich nature. The national park was first placed on the World Heritage List in 1981.
