A view of the city wall of the Fortress City in the just emerging autumn colours, which give a particularly green/reddish-brown dominated palette to the picture. It's a fine image to look at with lots of details that don't stand out at first glance.
It is a particularly pretty medieval town, built on a mountain with the town walls swaying with the landscape. The nice thing about this is that from one town wall you have a view 'from outside' of the others. It is a lovely green environment because the valley is full of ancient tall trees.
The imperial town of Rothenburg was an urban territory in the Holy Roman Empire. As a imperial town, Rothenburg was subject only to the authority of the emperor; the town administration was autonomous from neighbouring princes.
Rothenburg was located in southwestern Franconia on the Tauber River. Unlike most other imperial towns, Rothenburg managed to build up an extensive territory of about 400 km². Although part of this was lost again, it remained one of the largest Reich towns in the Empire.
Much of the town was destroyed in World War II and then rebuilt.
