About the artwork

Graphic architectural shot of Rotterdam harbour with modern high-rise buildings and hotels.
Impressive Rotterdam skyline
Europe's largest port city is characterised by its international character of bustling activity and world-class trade. Imposing ships from all directions bring their goods into the port of Rotterdam. It is a city of workers, innovators and innovators. After the centre was destroyed in the war, a new, vibrant city centre has emerged. World-famous architects have recreated the city centre. The cube flats, the Erasmus Bridge, the Markthal and the Van Nelle factory are just a few examples. Rotterdam presents itself as a young, dynamic cosmopolitan city with plenty to discover.

The Dutch architectural icon Rem Kohlhaas has created an impressive monument to himself with "De Rotterdam" in the harbour city. Completed in 2013, the 44-storey building is the largest in the Netherlands and resembles a vertical city. The high-rise complex between the KPN Tower and the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal dominates the skyline like giant building blocks that have slipped out of place. The high-rise complex is named after the flagship of the Holland-America Line, which brought emigrants and travellers to New York for decades. De Rotterdam is located directly on the banks of the River Maas and is connected to the southern part of the city by the Erasmus Bridge, which opened in 1996. Because of its shape, the bridge is affectionately known as "The Swan". It is the last north-south connection before the port of Rotterdam and the North Sea and is considered a landmark of Rotterdam. The bridge is constructed with a 139-metre-high asymmetrical bracket structure made of sky-blue steel, to which the steel cables are anchored, symbolising the mobile forces of the city.
