This photo was taken with backlighting and then converted to black and white. Snowdrops bloom early in the year, often as early as January. The bellflower is the first to bloom in the garden. While there is still snow in the garden, from January the first sprouts grow above ground, followed by the snow-white flowers. What people often do not know, but feel, is that snowdrops symbolise hope, awakening and anticipation of spring. Snowdrops are also colloquially called 'early buds'. But the official name is Galanthus. This name comes from the Greek words 'gala', meaning milk, and 'anthos', meaning flower. There are more than 75 species, but the two main ones are Galanthus nivalis and Galanthus elwesii.
