Spanish Warrior, Jacob de Gheyn (II)
This Spanish stallion belonged in 1600 to the Spanish army commander Albrecht of Austria. During the Battle of Nieuwpoort, the horse was captured and then donated to Prince Maurice. Three years later, as a war trophy and a sign of his triumph, Maurice had the stallion portrayed on a grand scale. But at one point the painting lost this meaning and was folded up; the damage can still be seen.
This painting has been digitally restored; it concerns only the horse and the man.
