Lago (lake) Nordenskjöld in Patagonia, Chile, glows in a breathtaking spectrum of blue and green tones that vary depending on the light conditions. Its intense turquoise colour is created by fine glacial deposits that refract the sunlight and make the water shimmer in almost unreal hues.
The photo is from my long journey through North, Central and South America, about which I have also written a book: "The Art of Wanting Nothing".
Framed by the rugged, snow-capped peaks of the Torres del Paine mountain range, the lake forms a fascinating contrast between the cold blue of its waters and the warm earthy tones of the surrounding landscape. Depending on the weather, white clouds, deep grey rainbanks or the fiery red of the setting sun are reflected on the smooth surface, so that the play of colours is constantly reinvented.
