Somewhere in a hidden space behind thick steel shutters, a miracle occurred this spring. In the rusted pipe, where excess water drains to the gutter, a very small bulb got stuck in exactly the place where the membrane already showed a shed. Because of this shed and the unprecedented power of spring, a tulip grew out of this, bravely resisting in the environment unknown to her. No fields of fellow tulips swaying to the rhythm of the wind to the slowly whizzing by buses of tourists taking hundreds of photos in an afternoon's time. Photos of no value that later disappear quickly swiping into the cloud over a glass of red wine.
This Tulipa darwin hybrid 'Apeldoorn' is an exception. Perhaps this formerly lonely tulip now hangs on the wall of a stylishly decorated living room, where its miraculous story is told daily and leaves people with barely recognisable smiles.
