St. Michael's Bridge Ghent at Night with Light Trails

by Daan Duvillier | Atmospheric cityscape & landscape prints

In this architectural photograph of St. Michael's Bridge (Sint-Michielsbrug) in Ghent, the illuminated facades and towers stand in the night beneath a dark, clouded sky. The warm light of the street lamps contrasts with the deep blue-black of the sky and gives Ghent's historic centre a mysterious, almost cinematic mood.

You look across the cobblestones of the bridge towards St. Nicholas' Church, which rises above the facades as the centrepiece of the image. On the left stands the neo-Gothic former post office with its pointed turrets and a clock tower behind it, while on the right more facades rise up with stepped gables and spires. In the foreground the cobblestones run like a glossy leading line towards the church, while on the right the ornate lamp posts with globe lamps cast sharp starbursts of light into the darkness. On the left, blue-white light trails from a passing vehicle streak through the image, the result of a long exposure, and a few figures stand still at the bridge railing.

This urban photograph of Ghent is an atmospheric eye-catcher for a living room, office, hotel or reception. The dark tones with warm light accents work well in interiors with a modern or understated look. For anyone who knows Ghent, it is a recognizable view of St. Michael's Bridge. For lovers of Belgian cities, architecture and night photography, it is a piece of wall art with character.
