Unlike the many Welf bridges that dominate Amsterdam's canals, the Staalmeestersbrug (bridge 227) is a wooden drawbridge in the centre of Amsterdam. It is certainly not the only drawbridge but this bridge offers a beautiful view of the Zuiderkerk. Many artists have immortalised its beauty in paintings including Claude Monet with the painting "The Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam (Looking up the Groenburgwal)" which can be admired at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Confusion surrounding the bridge's name. Everywhere the bridge is called the Staalmeestersbrug but the bridge really says Staalmeesterbrug without the S. My search across the internet has not been able to explain to me where this confusion comes from nor what the correct name ie. Since the one with the extra s is the most common, I'll go with Staalmeestersbrug.
