Standing figure with turban, from the side, Pieter Lastman, 1603
pen in brown ink, brush in brown and blue ink, over traces of black chalk, h 270mm × w 172mm More object information
At the start of his career, Lastman drew this sympathetic young man with turban and supple tunic in two different poses. The influence of the Mannerist style of his teacher Gerrit Pietersz is still perceptible here: notice the extra long, graceful fingers and pointed toes. The inscription 'P. Lastman' on both pages is added by the later owner Gerard ter Borch the Elder, who met Lastman in Rome.
