The Statue of Liberty is a giant statue on Liberty Island, at the mouth of the Hudson River, New York Harbor, United States. This statue was a gift from France to the United States in the late 19th century and is a welcoming symbol for visitors, immigrants and returning Americans. The bronze statue, inaugurated on 28 October 1886, is a gift for the 100th anniversary of the United States' independence and is an expression of friendship between the two countries. The sculptor of this statue was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) who designed the inner support structure. The Statue of Liberty is one of America's most recognised symbols around the world, symbolising the independence, freedom and liberties of the United States of America. In 1984, the Statue of Liberty was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
