On display at the Rijksmuseum: in room 2.6 Jacob Marrel's particular speciality were 'portraits' of flowering tulips. Tulip bulbs were fanatically collected in 17th-century Holland; sometimes staggering prices were paid for a single bulb. Tulips also play a leading role in this painting. The whimsically shaped, red-white and red-and-yellow striped specimens were eminently popular. Nature creates them, but also lets them decay - just like the dead frog on the right.
