The temple is dedicated to the Virabhadra, a fierce form of the god Shiva. Built in the 16th century, the temple's architectural features are in the Vijayanagara style with an abundance of carvings and paintings on almost every exposed surface of the temple. It is one of the centrally protected monuments of national importance and is considered one of the most spectacular Vijayanagara temples.
The temple is built on the south side of the city, on a low-lying hill with a large exposure of granite rock, which is shaped like a turtle. You therefore do not walk on a flat floor, but on sloping natural stone.
