Black-and-white shot of Chestnut Street in San Francisco. Using a telephoto lens, at the risk of one's life, at a busy intersection, creates tension in the image as the elements on the street appear to be closer together.
The dark atmosphere in the photograph was created by underexposing the image. The actual shooting time was around 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
For me, this photo highlights the long streets and slopes as you can find in San Francisco and also represents the many hours I spent lugging around there. After every steep street, there suddenly appeared to be an even steeper street.
Because the street plan is linear and you can see how far you still have to walk it still requires some perseverance.
