About "Striped awnings of an Andalusian butcher's shop in Chiclana"

About the artwork

This photographic, urban city motif of a typical butcher's shop with striped awnings was taken on 25 August 2025 with the NIKON D800 camera (lens: NIKKOR) during my first visit to Andalusia.

Chiclana de la Frontera (province of Cádiz) is a town in the autonomous region of Andalusia in the south of Spain on the Costa de la Luz.

The tourist resort with spa is located in the south of the Bay of Cádiz, 26 km south-east of the provincial capital on the N-340 national road and the A48 Cádiz-Málaga motorway. Better known neighbouring towns are Conil de la Frontera, San Fernando and Vejer de la Frontera.

The town was already inhabited in Phoenician, Punic and Roman times, but it was actually founded in 1303 by royal order of Ferdinand IV: Alonso Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno (the Good) received the area as a fiefdom for settlement. The old town centre was built in the 18th century. Until the 19th century, the Dukes of Medina Sidonia (as successors to Guzmán del Bueno) remained feudal lords of the village, which was mainly characterised by fishing and wine-growing. In 1876, the village was granted town rights by Alfonso XII.
At the end of the 20th century, work began on developing the municipal beaches for tourism, which is why the town now has the largest number of hotel beds in the province of Cádiz.

The following sights are worth a visit: historic town centre, Jesús Nazareno monastery and church (1667-1674), San Juan Bautista parish church (1773-1814) with clock tower, Santa Ana pilgrimage church (2nd half of the 18th century), doll museum, bullfighting museum, wine cellars (sherry), Fuente Amarga spa, Sancti Petri (former tuna fishing village).
