The English word for this phenomenon is 'sun dog', we just translated it literally here in the title. The official (Latin) name is Parhelium, but that doesn't help most of us much. A sun dog is a phenomenon that occurs when the sun is low. It is a kind of ice halo, two light spots on either side of the sun and often a circular light halo around the sun.
The sun dog only appears when there are enough ice crystals in the air, those ice crystals cause the strange reflection. Ice bends the sun's rays so that it seems as if the origin of the light does not come directly from the sun, but from these two 'suns'.
The Lofoten are a group of islands off the coast of Nordland province in the north of Norway. The Lofoten consist of a number of islands. The best-known ones are: Røst Værøy Gimsøya Moskenesøya Vestvågøy Austvågøy Flakstadøya Some places on the Lofoten are Svolvær, Leknes, Vågan, Ramberg, Moskenes and Reine.
