I took this photo in Madeira, on the mountain Pico do Arieiro. This mountain peak is over 1800m above sea level and is the second highest mountain peak in Madeira. The highest peak, Pico do Ruivo, is easily visible from here and you can even hike up to it.
Early on, we left for the mountain. We wanted to see the sunrise from the start. Winding along narrow, unlit mountain roads, we climbed higher and higher, through the clouds. We had no idea if we would be able to see anything at all on the mountain top, so it was exciting for a while. Fortunately, we broke through the clouds and saw the first colors appear on the horizon. So hurry up!
Once we parked our car we walked to the viewpoint, where the real magic begins. Slowly, more intense colors appear on the horizon and suddenly you see the tip of the sun appear above the clouds. The cloud tops began to delineate themselves. The warmth of the sun washed over our faces.
Finally, we were the last ones left on the mountain. Everyone else had left, either to the hiking trail or to a next destination.
We stayed to enjoy the beautiful view for a while longer and decided to go. One thing I know for sure; I definitely want to experience this magic again. And this photo brings me back to that a little bit.
