Most of South Africa's landscape consists of a vast plateau with an average altitude of 1500 metres. This is also called High Field. In the east lies a narrow coastal plain, Lowveld, with savannas with acacias, cinch trees and elephant trees. The northwest consists of the low-lying, desert-like Kalahari. The Lesotho highlands form the highest part of the southern part. This whole area lies above 1000 meters and has peaks higher than 3400 meters. In winter there is regular snowfall. The thousand-kilometer-long Drakensberg Mountains form a sub-alpine belt. Due to sufficient rainfall, this part with steep erosion walls is covered with forests. This is where South Africa's most important river, the Orange River, rises. In the south the coast runs steeply down, with many dangerous cliffs and a stormy sea. The first sailors were already impressed and didn't dare to moor at the Cape of Good Hope.
