As often happens, I was walking in the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes one afternoon. Wonderfully quiet and you see all sorts of things. This swan stood out because of its somewhat strange pose, which you only understand when you look a little longer. The swan was standing in the water, with grass in the foreground and reeds in the background. As these surroundings attracted quite a bit of attention, I filtered them out and made them white. The image has now become much more powerful.
For me, birds symbolise freedom. To be able to clean yourself up like this, unabashedly in nature, without malicious people around is an expression of it. The white colour reinforces that symbolism with a virginal, uncontaminated intention.
In a light, clean environment, this sculpture would fit very well, but that's just my idea about it. Of course, I cannot judge the images and feelings that other viewers get with it.
