Swell is a digital artwork created by a fusion between a drawing and a painting. The drawing was created using drawing techniques of pencil and charcoal and the painting is made up of multiple layers of various painting techniques.
The work was inspired by a film recording I made during my vacation in Italy. There I visited the small picturesque coastal town of Bogliasco located on the Italian Riviera near Genoa. There I stood on a cliff and looked down at wild waves on the sea.
I wanted to capture the glare of the sun on the seawater with my telephoto lens when the sea began to swell and a wave ripple passed by in the image. What a stroke of luck. I already like the video shot, but when I paused the image at the peak of the wave I saw in it the potential of a work of art.
What I find particularly special about this image is that the water of the wave gives me a sense that it is both crashing and swelling at the same time. This gives the image a special dynamism and energy. In addition, I find that the shades of dark blue, turquoise and white also make the image wonderfully refreshing. I would dive right in.
