If you look closely, you can see some climbers who have almost reached the summit, others still have quite a way to go.
The Breithorn (4,164 m) is a multi-peaked, heavily glaciated mountain ridge in the Valais Alps. The 3,883-metre-high Klein Matterhorn is right next door. The highest point of the Breithorn ridge and at the same time the easiest four-thousand metre peak in the Alps to climb is the western summit (main summit, Breithorn Occidentale, 4160 m above sea level). The normal ascent is considered one of the easiest routes to climb a four-thousand metre peak.
The Klein Matterhorn can be easily reached by cable car from Zermatt. The total journey time from Zermatt is around 40 minutes.
Zermatt in the southern Swiss canton of Valais is a mountain resort popular with skiers, climbers and hikers. The town lies at an altitude of 1,600 metres at the foot of the famous pyramid-shaped Matterhorn. Zermatt's main street, Bahnhofstrasse, is home to boutiques, hotels and restaurants as well as a lively après-ski scene.
Zermatt's location at the foot of the Matterhorn and in the middle of a large hiking and skiing region makes it one of the most attractive holiday villages in the world. The ski area comprises 54 cable cars and lifts and 360 kilometres of pistes. The "Matterhorn glacier paradise" area is the largest and highest summer ski area in Europe. Numerous national ski teams train here in summer.
