As regular visitors to Granada, of course we cannot ignore the Alhambra. Granada is home to the world-famous Alhambra structure, leaning into the hills that are the run-up to the Sierra Nevada, behind the deeply carved Darro River, lies this fabulous building, which began as a fortress but grew over the centuries into a magnificent palace. This centuries-old fortress is one of the most famous buildings in the world. The atmosphere of 1000 and one nights, fairytale beauty, unparalleled craftsmanship and artisanship captured in beautiful Mediterranean Moorish architecture. A must see if you are in southern Spain. Once seen is always remembered, always able to savour the atmosphere exuded by the buildings and its well-kept gardens.
A walk through the buildings of the Alhambra leads you through a succession of architectural styles. The Alhambra and appurtenances is a great time capsule of building coast and building industry, of atmospheres and experiences.
This image was taken from the Moorish district of Albayzin, which is just a little higher up the next hill. The Darro river separates Alhambra and Albayzin.
The Albayzin district is beautifully built against a hill in the days when transport took place on foot or by cart and donkey. Narrow streets, winding, not equipped for cars's, which do drive through with a lot of steering. Also worth a walk is this beautiful district where, as a visitor, you soon imagine yourself in a different world from what we are used to on a daily basis. Granada, well worth a holiday visit.
