What is unusual about this landscape is that Rembrandt drew it on precious parchment. He depicted the view he had over the Amstel River in a southerly direction from the centre of the Blauwbrug. Towards the horizon he achieved a rarefied, atmospheric effect by only indicating the shapes there with fine pen lines and shading very lightly with a brush.
