The Dance of Kandinsky (Joy of Dance) by Arjen Roos

Geometry, rhythm and colour come together in The Dance of Kandinsky (Joy of Dance) - a vibrant work where abstraction meets human expression. Twelve unique 3D renders of dancers move on a dynamic, AI-generated background, digitally elaborated in bright fields of colour and graphic composition.

For this remake, I deliberately used the original AI background as a rough underlay: I then digitally repainted the image and built it up layer by layer. This approach created a work with more depth, texture and painterly nuance, with composition and colour relationships manually honed. The AI phase was thus the starting point, but the final character was shaped by the painting process and finishing.

Some figures show a solo dancer, while others depict dancing couples - with movements ranging from classical ballet to contemporary dance. Each figure is constructed from a self-designed semi-transparent 'scribble' texture, giving them a drawn, light and almost ethereal character. They seem to float over an architectural canvas full of circles, planes and contrasting shapes: a clear nod to Kandinsky's visual language, but with a contemporary, digital twist. If you look closely, you will also see references to M.C. Escher's spatial games and Mondrian's rigid arrangement.

What makes this work special is the combination of rigid geometry with manual nuance: in this remake, the background has been digitally repainted and refined, after which the dancers have been constructed and placed one by one as individual 3D figures. This makes it not a repeatable template, but a deliberately composed image that shows its layeredness especially in real life.
