In 1946 KLM was the first European airline to set up a transatlantic connection to New York, with The Flying Dutchman. True pioneers! Seventy years ago, this DC-4 was the aircraft that linked the Netherlands with New York and the rest of the world. There may be only three airworthy DC-4's left in the world. One of these is a DC-4 that was left to decay with rust in Johannesburg, South Africa. The plane, with its historical nickname, was restored in 2016 for the trip home: Schiphol Amsterdam.
