About ‘The Lady of Shalott’ by ¡ guay !

‘The Lady of Shalott’ is a poem by Tennyson about – in a nutshell – a woman who is locked away in a tower and under a spell. By looking out at the passing Lancelot, the spell is indeed broken, but she must pay for this with her life.

A few years ago, I was introduced to this lady through a work by John William Waterhouse, which depicts the lady drifting in a boat towards Camelot after breaking the spell. She will die on the way. I found it a beautiful work, magical, dramatic and sad, and it inspired me to create my own interpretation in the typical and recognisable Pre-Raphaelite style. Without, incidentally, harbouring any desire or illusion of being able to match Waterhouse’s painting.

This work is clearly somewhat cheerier than the story and Waterhouse’s painting, highlighting the happier side: namely, that the lady has been freed from the spell. The boat is beautifully decorated with flowers, and a dove of peace, with a twig in its beak, flies towards the Lady of Shalott.
