The Last Ballad by Carla van Zomeren

This portrait treads an intriguing line between classical painting and digital imagery. The work has an almost baroque feel, yet at the same time exudes something modern and surreal.

The young woman takes centre stage, facing the viewer head-on and almost motionless, as if she has stepped straight out of a forgotten fairy tale or an alternative history. Her large, light-blue eyes immediately catch the eye: clear, vulnerable and yet distant. The porcelain face contrasts sharply with the wild, voluminous hair that floats around her head like a dark cloud. This gives the portrait a dramatic, almost theatrical composition.

The clothing and accessories reinforce the sense of mystique. The rich fabrics, golden patterns and deep red and blue tones are reminiscent of folk fashion, combined with haute couture. The flowers and metal ornaments in the headband lend the image a ceremonial air, as if the figure represents a musical priestess or a gypsy-like muse. The guitar at the bottom of the image suggests a story, but remains deliberately in the background — as if music is merely an echo of her inner world.

What is particularly striking is the texture. You can clearly see that the image is not purely photographic. The fine textures in the skin, hair and background betray the influence of AI generation, whilst Photoshop and subsequent fine-tuning provide control, balance and artistic coherence. Particularly in the hair and fabric patterns, a painterly relief emerges that seems almost tangible. As a result, the outcome feels less like a ‘digital image’ and more like a contemporary mixed-media artwork.

The atmosphere is melancholic, dreamy and slightly alienating. The portrait does not seem intended to depict reality exactly, but to evoke emotion and character — a fictional personality that appears both vulnerable and iconic.
