The Last Guardian – Monument Valley

by Frank Schröter Photography

A towering, weathered tree stump stands in the foreground of Monument Valley. Warm light glints off the twisted wood fibres and is reflected in the red rock faces behind. Between the mighty rock formations, the view opens up to reveal a solitary rock tower in the distance. The clear blue sky and the vast expanse of darker ground lend the composition a sense of tranquillity. This vertical landscape photograph contrasts the small, weathered silhouette of the tree with the monumental forms of the desert. The eye follows the curved wood fibres upwards and then meets the vast rock faces in the background. This creates an interplay between close-up details and sweeping landscape forms. The tree stump occupies only a small part of this space, yet its position in the foreground lends it particular significance. Darker areas of the ground provide a foundation for the warm colours of the wood and sandstone. The photograph combines a clearly recognisable natural form with an unobstructed view. As a wall hanging, it invites the viewer to take their time and let the different scales of the wood’s texture and the rocky landscape sink in. The visible forms remain more important than any narrative.
