Towards the Sky – Bryce Canyon

by Frank Schröter Photography

A tall conifer soars upwards between the steep rock faces of Bryce Canyon. From this low vantage point, its trunk draws a clear line through the narrow opening towards the blue sky. A warm orange hue dominates the rock face on the left, whilst the opposite surfaces appear darker. The tree’s crown spreads its delicate branches across the upper part of the portrait-format frame, connecting the two sides of the rocky cavity.

The rough surface of the rock contrasts with the uniform line of the trunk. Small indentations, protrusions and irregular edges break up the large walls. Below, the view opens out onto a brightly lit rock face, the colour of which makes the darker areas appear even more vivid. The sky remains visible as a narrow, tranquil strip between these forms. This makes the tree’s height just as palpable as the spatial confinement of its surroundings. The photograph was individually developed and retouched. As a wall hanging, it combines vibrant natural colours with a clear view upwards. Up close, the bark, branches and rock structures invite closer inspection. From a greater distance, the towering trunk and the blue space between them take centre stage.
