Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.
Move your phone gently from side to side. Holding it still or waving it around quickly does not help.
Make sure there is enough light. In a dark room your phone has nothing to lock onto.

About ‘The Milky Way above a Frisian polder windmill’ by Thijs Friederich

On the night of 12–13 August 2026, the Perseid meteor shower reached its peak, on the very same day that the Netherlands witnessed its greatest solar eclipse since 1999. Once the sun had set, I drove on in search of a dark spot in the Netherlands. I found it in Friesland, by this polder mill in the middle of a meadow.

No streetlights, no houses, just a narrow canal reflecting the last light from the horizon. The Milky Way rose right behind the windmill, and I even managed to capture a few shooting stars (the Perseids).

The photograph was taken with a long exposure under a moonless sky. A tranquil, dark image that is best appreciated in large format, where the thousands of stars really come into their own. Suitable for a living room, bedroom or workspace with a subdued colour scheme.
